This is a condition where the skin of the baby especially on the buttocks, genitalia, groin and inner thigh, becomes red and inflamed. Baby’s skin is very sensitive and if not treated promptly can progress to weeping red sores and may get infected.

Symptoms

v Rough, red patches on the buttocks, genitalia, groin and thighs.
v Blisters
v Weeping red sores.

Complication

v Bacterial and fungal infection of the rash.
v Urinary track infection.
v Allergic skin rash (Exzema)

Causes

Skin irritation as a result of
v Prolonged contact with wet nappies and stools.
v Soap which has not been thoroughly rinsed off after a bath.
v Change in the baby’s diet which makes the urine and stools more irritating to the skin.
v Allergy or contact irritant on inner layer of napkin.

Self Management

v Change nappies frequently.
v Apply barrier cream on prone areas at each nappy change.
v Leave the genital area exposed for as long as possible.
v Use good quality diapers that can keep the baby’s bottom dry.
v Consult a doctor if the rash gets worse or does not heal.
v Apply barrier cream liberally.  Do not use nappies as long as possible.
v Do not use plastic pants.

Nappy Change Routine

v Wash baby’s bottom with wet cotton balls.  Use unscented soap.
v Pat dry and leave exposed till dry.
v Use barrier cream or protective cream.
v Rinse soiled napkins before placing in a bucket of nappy soaking solution or wash     immediately.
v Dry napkins thoroughly in the sun. 
v Take steps to prevent nappy rash rather than treat it after it occurs.
