Acne is
one of the commonest skin diseases among young people and usually begins at
puberty. The commonest sites are the face, back and chest. It is due to the
changing levels of sex hormone. Acne usually clears up during adulthood. Acne
can be minimised and the scaring can be reduced by proper skin care.
Acne involves
the oil-secreting glands (sebaceous glands), ducts and the distal part of the
hair follicle. There is blockage of the hair follicles and the sebaceous glands
by plugs of sebum. Bacteria in the plug multiply and form pus in the pimple.
When the plug of sebum is under the skin it is known as a whitehead, and when
it reaches the skin surface it darkens and is called a black head.
