MDMA (MethyleneDioxyMetAmphetamine), or commonly known as Ecstasy is a synthetic drug. Its structure is similar to amphetamine and thus shares similar hallucinogenic (LSD-like) and stimulant properties. Some of the popular street names for Ecstasy are Adam, X-TC, Clarity, Essence, Stacy, Lover's Speed, Eve etc.

THE HISTORY

MDMA was first synthesized in 1914 as an appetite suppressant and later used by psychiatrists and psychologists to treat psycological and emotional problems. Its use was limited and later discontinued as the side effects outweighed its benefits. However, it became very popular in the streets where it was misused.

THE MISUSE

This drug is misused for its mood elevation properties. Although the substance itself is not addictive, it can create a behavioral addiction when individuals form a need to consume it and become compulsive in its use.

MDMA is usually misused by teenagers and young adults who visit nightclubs, pubs, bars and raves, especially when there is an urge to party all night long, with loud music. Since MDMA is a stimulant, it makes them feel energized and they don't tire easily. Some misuse it to increase their libido but this has no evidence in medicine.

THE DANGER

The side effects of MDMA are quiet alarming. The misuse of this drug could cause behavioral problems such as confusion, depression, anxiety, paranoia and sleep pattern disturbances. It also causes physical symptoms such as skin allergies, severe nausea and vomiting, heatstroke, dehydration, blurred vision, rapid eye movements, teeth clenching, muscle tension and weakness, chills, sweating and even faintness. The most disturbing side effect is its toxicity to the heart, brain and liver and a severe form of it can lead to death. As the effects of MDMA is lost with prolonged use, the consumers tend to increase the dose to attain similar effects as before, thus increasing the danger of its side effects.

MDMA has no licit use and one who consumes it is a drug abuser. One who possesses or distributes it could be convicted under law. MDMA causes serious damage to both our health and emotions - a big price to pay for some temporary entertainment.
